once the first results were available, the design team started to have the first discussions about the next steps. this included evaluation of the or layout and the handover process. therefore, a surgical team was simulated in the des model and the handover process was analyzed in detail. the team found that the handover process was time-consuming and even though the surgeons were only allowed to handover the instruments once, they had to do it over and over again for every instrument. therefore, one of the next steps was to solve this problem, by introducing a new trm, which was already incorporated in the first version of the delmia software. the new trm was also evaluated and was able to reduce the handover times for all team members significantly, but still the handover process could be improved further. in the next step, the team started to look for solutions to the problem.

after delmia, i was able to go through the college internships for mechanical engineering and cad engineering. i wasnt sure which of the two i would like to work with the most. the cad engineering program in college has a much greater emphasis on the physical world and the cad internships i was offered were much less about the actual design of a product and more about using existing cad tools to design and 3d print prototypes. i also had the opportunity to intern with a smaller company in my area that is a robotics company.

i spent the next semester on a specialized study abroad program to the harbin institute of technology in china. the institute’s research focus was in aerospace engineering and they trained students to work in the manufacturing and assembly process, as well as a number of other roles. the focus of the robotics research program was on assembly automation, such as how to build large composites with a high level of accuracy and how to assemble large aircraft parts. the program was structured in a similar fashion to mit’s sensei program ( and focused heavily on real world applications and practical work. in my second semester at the institute, they had a robotics design program that students could sign up for after completing their basic school curriculum. i signed up for this program, and they assigned me a team that i would be working with for the entire semester. this team was made up of 4 students, myself, 3 other people from china, and an american student. we spent all of our time in the library designing and redesigning a surgical robot that would be able to perform multiple tasks with limited manual input. it was a challenging project to say the least, and we spent a majority of our time simply looking at the problem and trying to figure out how to solve it. this project was the most valuable thing i learned in china, and also the most valuable thing i learned in my time in school. i learned how to think and problem solve in a way i had not learned in the past, and i learned that simply by working on problems in a physical environment will always be more effective than just sitting in a classroom and reading a book about the subject matter. this was my first real exposure to industry, and i was able to see the problems that the typical engineer isnt even close to being able to work on. the research team was able to build a basic robotic arm that was able to pick up a small object from a table and place it in another, and this was after about 3 months of design work. i spent much of my time in the library working on various problems and trying to build the system from scratch, and for a short while, even though it wasnt my idea, i was given the job of designing the controller. i was also given the task of creating the cad model for a large industrial robot and programming it into the robot. i loved creating these models and having the cad people check my work for any mistakes. i learned that i still had a lot to learn in cad and that i had a lot to learn about programming. after about a month of work, i had finished the controller, and the team had a functional robot that was able to pick up objects, place them in a bin, and put them on a cart.

the first few months at niar were more about learning dassault systemes software, learning about engineering, and finding my niche. during the months spent learning my way around dassault solidworks catia i knew i liked catia better than solidworks. even though both of these catia-based products are often compared i tend to favor catia because it is a lot more intuitive and easier to use. the ui is easier to understand, i like how it feels in my hand better, and the interface is clean and thought out. that said, the bottom line is i prefer solidworks as well, but the bridge was not completely built until i had shown some proficiency in solidworks. that bridge was built once i came to terms with the fact i did not hate solidworks. that process of acceptance was a long one and took some trial and error to get past.
this was a lot of trial and error that i wish everyone could have experienced for themselves. it took some trial and error to find the right balance between getting the most accurate results and being able to work efficiently and maintain a workflow that helped me be successful.
after working in the niar delmia lab for a few months i was then tasked with developing the build, test and adjust modules needed to allow for continuous 3d printing. since we have previously used the open source platform for this to make sure it would scale for manufacturing and that the model would be better suited for 3d printing. i worked alongside a mechanical engineer at dassault systemes using a commercial brand of cadcam software to create the model. during this task i learned a lot about developing in a commercial workflow, not just using cad and catia, but actually the entire workflow for 3d printing. i also learned a lot about the process of manufacturing, how it works and how the engineers on the assembly line and testing machines do their job. i will forever be grateful to the whole team at dassault systemes for giving me this opportunity to learn, and work alongside them.
