The aim of this study was to evaluate the antimicrobial efficacy of a mist of hydrogen peroxide gas (Fog) and to evaluate the effectiveness of BioMist, a ‘fogging’ machine, in eliminating bacterial contamination from surfaces. Eight different kinds of biological indicators (BIs) and spore-forming bacterial pathogens were used to verify the ability of the fog in eliminating bacterial contamination from surfaces. A mist of hydrogen peroxide gas in the fog achieved a further reduction of microbial contamination on the surfaces. The large number of spore-forming pathogens demonstrated by testing together with the environment of the dental office with a high level of relative humidity and temperature, along with the lack of maintenance of room surfaces, makes the environment in the dental office favourable to colonization of microbial contamination. Based on the results obtained in this study, the best approach for disinfection of the dental office should be an initial fogging of surfaces followed by disinfection with a chemical agent (generally the fogging device removes 99.9% of bacterial contamination) and a final fogging.
